Searching for the Rich T

I was raised on Rich Tea biscuits. That is not exactly true but certainly some of my favourite childhood memories are of eating Rich Tea biscuits at my grandmother’s house and the secret she shared with me that they tasted even better when dunked in tea. It is a memory I treasure and one that still prompts me to search for the Rich Tea biscuits when shopping. Treasure comes in many forms – or what I call ‘Rich T’. Recently we have been reminded by the news of personal memories captured and shared on social media from 2014. Memories of a common experience across the world that raised money for research into the degenerative disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Treasured memories raising ‘treasure’ in what was called the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’.

  1. I enjoyed reading this and the links you made. I hope it reminds people that something as small and round as a biscuit ( or in the case of the ice challenge refreshing lol ) can be mighty in making a difference in the world. I believe humans can make a difference as a whole and fundamentally want to. Its a shame it takes social media to do this now when we all live in already formed communities ‘sites’. The question is can we harness these social internet mob moments and keep the momentum going i.e. pay it forward? Maybe I should put out a challenge to ‘ say hi & how are you today ?’ To one new person you meet and see if your rich tea concept of love grows ….

    1. Thanks NM the question of harnessing the spontaneity and energy of social media sites to promote awareness of issues or even give momentum to social change is an interesting one. The lesson to be learned from the Ice Bucket Challenge is that the simpler the message/action the better. Unfortunately this does present the problem that such actions via social media may be limited in the face of more complex or controversial issues. Let’s keep talking…
